The BBC News Style Guide

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Every major publication — newspapers, magazines, websites, etc. — has its own set of grammar, spelling and punctuation rules that govern the way everything published in the publication is uniform. This document is the BBC’s style guide and details all the rules for writing in a BBC outlet. If you are a writer yourself or are considering starting a newspaper or any other kind of publication, this guide could serves as a great prototype to base your own style guide on, or you could just use the BBC’s. Many outlets use similar style guidelines and many smaller market publications or publications without the capital to create their own style guide just use generic style guides like this one. Most of the style detailed in this guide is commonplace in most UK publications, whereas most US publications are based on the AP style guide.

English Phrasal Verbs

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

For those out there who aren’t language and/or grammar nerds, a phrasal verb is a combination of a verb and a preposition, a verb and an adverb, or a verb with both an adverb and a preposition, any of which are part of the syntax of the sentence, and so are a complete semantic unit. A phrasal verb often has a meaning which is different from the original verb. In non grammar nerd terms that means a phrase — typically idiomatic — that uses a verb and another part of speech that combines to change the meaning of the verb. A few examples are: using “to get together” instead of “to congregate”, “to put off” rather than “to postpone”, or “to get out” rather than “to exit”. General phrasal verbs are things like “He walked across the square,” “She opened the shutters and looked outside,” or “When he heard the crash, he looked up.”

Other terms for phrasal verb are ‘compound verb’, ‘verb-adverb combination’ or ‘verb-particle construction.’
